What Weapons for my New Necro.
Hi everyone,
ive recently begun playing GW again after about an 18 month layoff, so because of the time away i decided to create a new character, of which i picked the only one i hadnt tried, a Necro.
Now, after getting to Yak's Bend, ive decided i want to get some decent weapon sets so here is where i need peoples advice. Currently, i am using the Stonereaper and a collectors Bone Staff, however, i prefer Wand/Offhand combo's. They just look better.
I would be greatful if i could get some advice as to what the best green weapons are (golds seems to cost to much) Im after both a Deathe Magic and a Curses set.
Regards
Nova

Get your ass to Vasburg armoury/leviathan pits if you got factions and buy a 40/40 set for each death and curses from weaponssmith. cheaper than greens at like 5k+mats.
That should cover you for most things, unless you want a staff with +enchant% too, but they arent hard to get a hold of.

What I'd do is get to the Crystal Desert first. You can get 40/40 sets from the collectors there very easily. They'll last you until you farm a skin you really like.
Most of the Curses wands and foci just aren't that great. However, I love the Deldrimor Curse Focus, as it's a beer stein.
As for Death magic, I'd recommend Ghial's Staff more than any other green. I'm not a fan of the skin, but the mods are good for a Minion Master.

It's easier to decide on a weapon set once you've decided on a build.
If you're just starting a new character, especially a spellcaster, your weapons can be as subpar as you like until you settle into a build that you definitely want to run.

[edit: let me expand that a bit]
Curses:
Set 1: 20/20 wand + 20/20 focus.
Usage: Cast curse spells in this.
Set 2: Silencing/+5e/+5AL spear + 20/20 focus
Usage: Cast Technobabble in this (if you're using Technobabble); Spear things to trigger Barbs/MoP; stay in this set when you're being too lazy to change back and forth like you should.
Set 3: Silencing/+5e/+5AL spear + any/+30hp shield.
(If you can spare the inventory space, having a "10AL vs X" shield for every damage type would be ideal. If not, -5/20% is a pretty bad mod, but it's probably the best "general purpose" shield inscription for a caster.)
Usage: Switch to this if you come under attack (or, preferrably, right before you come under attack); cast in it if you stay under attack.
Set 4: any longbow or flatbow
Usage: Pulling.
Death:
Set 1: 20/20 wand + 20HCT/20% +1death focus
Usage: Cast anything death related, especially minions
Set 2: 20HSR/+15e/-1 e-regen wand + Konrru's Fervor focus
Usage: Temporary switch to cast minions if not enough energy (then SR your way back out of deficit).
Set 3: Any/+5e/+5AL + any/+30hp shield.
(Spear can alternatively be 20%enchant. Doing so sacrifices some defense in exchange for giving you access to an enchanting mod for casting Masochism. See notes above regarding shield inscription.)
Usage: Switch to this if you come under attack (or, preferrably, right before you come under attack)
Set 4: any longbow or flatbow
(Better place for your 20%enchant mod if you want one for Masochism. Also use a +5e mod to reduce energy pool shrinkage if you plan on casting on your bow set.)
Usage: Pulling.
Blood:
Set 1: Any/+5e/20%enchant spear + 20/20 blood focus
Usage: Cast blood spells in this.
Set 2: 10HCT(all)/10HCT(all)/20HRT(all)/20%enchant staff or 10HCT(all)/20HCT/20HRT(all)/20%enchant blood staff
Usage: Cast non-blood spells in this. Stay in this set if you're being too lazy to change back and forth properly.
Set 3: Set 1: Any/+5e/20%enchant spear + any/+30hp shield.
(Spear can alternatively be +5AL. This gives a little more defense at the cost of losing the enchant mod while under fire. Spear can alternatively have 10HCT inscription. See notes above regarding shield inscription.)
Set 4: any longbow or flatbow
Usage: Pulling.
[edit: added an alternate I forgot earlier]

Is +1 / 20% really worth it?
My MM bomber uses 4 enchantments and I don't know whether to give him 40/40 set or staff with 20% enchant mod (spear is not an option because of hero AI with some skills). I just don't know what +1 mod would do; that's like +1dmg on average when some death magic skill is used.

This thread was originally about players. For a player character, there's no doubt that the 20%/+1 mod is worth it. Popping out a minion one level higher gives it extra damage, hp, and armor that stick with it permanently. Since hero minion bombers are a lot less oriented towards keeping high-effectiveness minions around long term, it's not as important for them. (Just don't tell me your MB hero is running Maso and AotL "for the attribute boost" but you don't want to give him the 20%/+1...)
